Keeping your home address separate from your Irish business
Working from home does not mean you want every customer letter arriving at your front door. A separate business correspondence address can create a useful boundary, provided you understand which information still needs to be disclosed.
Start with your public contact details
List where you currently display your residential address: your website, quotations, invoices, email signature, online directories and customer forms. Decide where an agreed business correspondence address can appropriately replace it.
Before making changes, check the disclosure requirements that apply to your business type and the document involved. A business mailing address should be genuinely available to receive the correspondence sent to it.
Separate business correspondence from statutory records
The privacy benefit of a mailing address is practical. It can help route business letters away from home and avoid repeatedly publishing a residential address as the general customer contact point.
Company filings operate under separate rules. Using a different registered office does not automatically conceal a director’s residential address in CRO documents. Nor does it erase information from past records, cached websites or third-party databases.
CRO’s residential-address exemption is limited
The CRO provides a T1 process for exemption from disclosure of a residential address in exceptional circumstances. Its guidance describes supporting requirements, including Garda involvement. This is a distinct process rather than an automatic benefit of buying a virtual address.
The CRO also explains that the exemption does not retrospectively redact historical documents. If this issue is important in your circumstances, read the current CRO guidance and obtain appropriate advice before making assumptions about the result.
Build a practical privacy checklist
- Choose an agreed business correspondence address and confirm permitted uses.
- Update customer-facing details consistently where appropriate.
- Keep forwarding instructions current so private correspondence is not misdirected.
- Review old public documents and directory listings separately.
- Use a dedicated business email address rather than a personal inbox in public contact details.
- Check statutory filing and document disclosure requirements with your adviser.
What to ask an address service
Ask who can access your post, how it is stored, who receives forwarding details and what happens when the agreement ends. If scanning is available, ask how scans are shared and retained. These practical handling arrangements matter as much as the address itself.
